2021 Write Mentee Wish List!

Hello, potential Mentees!

If you reached this blog, it must mean you're thinking of submitting to me. If not, you're a bit lost or an Ex-Boyfriend who couldn't find anything of use on my FaceBook page.

Now, lets get into what I'm looking for:

Do you read much in the YA genre? Because I do.

If you don't read YA and try to make a book fit into YA, I can tell.

In order to be a successful writer, you must read. In order to get published in the big publishing houses, you need to write something much like the stuff they've been putting out within the last five years.

If that's not your jam, no worries! I have experience in Small Press and Indie publishing as well. There are many roads and I can help you determine the best route for you. It's your book, your goals and I'm here for it!

My mentoring style: I am a cheerleader.

I try to give constructive feedback where it's needed, but I am NEVER going to tear you down. My goal is to bolster your strengths and provide resources on what can be improved.

That being said, if you don't use said resources, I'm going to know!

I tend to be collaborative, I like to bounce ideas along with the comments. Those are meant to inspire you.

The quickest way to end up with "the talk" is to openly tell me you are not going to listen to my advice. Generally speaking, that is a big no no. Critiques are hard, I get it, but if you signed up to be a mentee and find yourself unable to make changes to a manuscript, we're going to talk about why that is.

Wishlist

YA (Ages 14-19)

80k words to 95k words

Give me your dark and creepy.

Give me your witches and historical stories.

Give me your Grimdark fantasy featuring female protagonists.

I want bloody and cruel magic systems that take a toll on the main characters.

I'm a huge fan of mythology, especially the lesser-known stories like Asian, African, East Indian, and Indigenous tribes.

Whether out and proud, in the closet, or just not sure, LGBTQ+ is welcome!

Did I mention I really, want Indigenous folklore?

Pretty please?

DO NOT WANT

I'm going to get this stuff sent to me anyways, but hopefully, this will help.

Military stuff. I don't get it. I'm not into it.

Hardcore Sci-Fi.

No rape or rapey boyfriends. This is not the place for Edward Cullen to stare creepily through the bushes.

I'm all for romance, but contemporary stuff isn't my area of expertise. Send your When Dimple Meets Rishi somewhere else.

If he's toxic like The Darkling or King Cardan, then I'm all about it. If he's a Jacob or an Edward, I'm gonna yeet that book into the sun.
